Liposuction
Long Island, New York Yee Cheng Low, MD
Sculpting, Not Weight Loss
- 3–7Days to desk work
- 3–4Weeks to exercise
- 3–6Months to final contour

Liposuction removes localized fat deposits that resist diet and exercise, refining contour and improving proportion. It is a sculpting procedure — not a weight-loss procedure, and not a substitute for skin removal.
What Is Liposuction?
Small cannulas are introduced through tiny incisions to remove fat in a controlled, layered fashion. Modern technique emphasizes smooth transitions between treated and untreated areas — the difference between a natural result and visible irregularity.
- Commonly treated areas
- Abdomen, flanks, waist, back, thighs, hips, arms, chest, chin and neck.
- High-definition liposuction
- A more advanced approach that removes fat selectively around the underlying musculature to create subtle shadows and highlights, accentuating natural anatomy. Suited to patients already lean and fit who want visible definition. Dr. Low assesses carefully whether a patient’s body fat and skin quality make this appropriate; performed on the wrong candidate, it looks artificial.
Benefits
- Removes stubborn, diet-resistant fat
- Improves proportion and silhouette
- Refines the waistline
- Treats multiple areas in one procedure
- Harvested fat can be used for grafting elsewhere
- Permanent removal of treated fat cells
An Honest Word on Skin
Liposuction removes fat. It does not tighten skin. Where skin elasticity is poor, removing the underlying volume can make looseness more apparent rather than less.
This is the single most common reason for disappointment with liposuction, and Dr. Low will assess your skin quality candidly. Where a skin-removal procedure would serve you better, he will tell you — even where it means recommending a larger operation than you came in asking about.
Who Is a Candidate?
You may be a good candidate if you:
- Are close to a stable, healthy weight
- Have localized fat deposits that resist diet and exercise
- Have good skin elasticity
- Are in good general health with realistic expectations
Recovery & Expectations
Most patients return to desk work within 3–7 days, with exercise resuming at 3–4 weeks. Compression garments are worn for several weeks and genuinely affect the quality of the final contour.
Swelling and firmness are significant early. Final contour emerges over three to six months as swelling resolves and tissues settle.

ExploreArm Lift (Brachioplasty)
Brachioplasty removes excess, sagging skin and fat from the upper arms to create a more toned, contoured appearance — a common concern after significant weight loss or as part of the natural aging process, when skin loses elasticity and “wing”-like laxity develops between the elbow and underarm.
ExploreThighplasty (Thigh Lift)
Thighplasty removes excess skin and tightens tissue in the inner and/or outer thighs, addressing laxity that often results from major weight loss, aging, or pregnancy.
