Breast Fat Grafting

Overview

Breast fat grafting transfers fat from one part of the body — most often the abdomen, flanks, or thighs — to the breast, adding subtle volume and softening contour without an implant.

Dr. Low’s use of fat grafting is largely as a refinement tool: correcting rippling, filling upper-pole hollowing, smoothing implant edges, and improving asymmetry. It also serves as a modest standalone volume option for patients who want a small increase and no implant at all.

01

What Is Breast Fat Grafting?

Fat is harvested by gentle liposuction, processed to isolate viable fat cells, and injected in fine layers across multiple planes of the breast. Layered placement matters: fat requires a blood supply to survive, and grafts placed in bulk do not get one.

Expect 50–70% of transferred fat to survive permanently. The remainder is reabsorbed over the first several months, which is why the early result looks fuller than the final one.

Benefits of Breast Fat Grafting

  • Adds volume using your own tissue, with no implant
  • Softens visible implant edges and corrects rippling
  • Restores upper-pole fullness after implant removal or weight loss
  • Improves subtle asymmetry
  • Contours the donor area at the same time
  • Natural feel and movement

Who Is a Candidate?

You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Want a modest increase in volume — typically half a cup to a cup
  • Have sufficient donor fat available
  • Prefer to avoid implants entirely
  • Need contour refinement following previous breast surgery
  • Are at a stable weight

Patients seeking a substantial increase in size will not achieve it with fat grafting alone. Implants remain the appropriate option, and Dr. Low will say so.

Recovery & Expectations

Recovery involves both the breast and the donor site. Most patients return to desk work within 5–7 days, with exercise resuming at 3–4 weeks. Compression garments are worn over the donor area.

Volume decreases over the first three months as unviable fat resorbs, then stabilizes. A second grafting session is sometimes recommended to build further volume — this is planned, not a complication.
