Breast Reduction
Long Island, New York Yee Cheng Low, MD
Relief, Proportion, and a Result That Fits Your Frame
- 1–2Weeks to desk work
- 4–6Weeks to exercise
- 6–12Months to final shape

Breast reduction removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to create breasts that are lighter, higher, and proportionate to the rest of your body. It is one of the most consistently satisfying procedures in plastic surgery, because it solves a genuine physical problem alongside an aesthetic one.
Patients who have carried disproportionately large breasts often describe years of neck, shoulder and back pain, bra strap grooving, skin irritation beneath the breast fold, difficulty exercising, and constant frustration with clothing. Reduction addresses all of it.
What Is Breast Reduction?
Reduction surgery removes glandular tissue, fat, and stretched skin, then reshapes and lifts the remaining tissue into a smaller, better-supported breast. The nipple-areola complex is repositioned and usually reduced in size.
Because the breast is simultaneously lifted, reduction includes the benefits of mastopexy. Liposuction may be used alongside to refine the contour toward the armpit and side of the chest, where excess fullness often persists.
Benefits of Breast Reduction
- Relieves neck, shoulder, and back pain
- Eliminates bra strap grooving
- Resolves rashes and irritation beneath the breast fold
- Makes exercise and physical activity substantially easier
- Improves posture
- Creates proportion between breasts, waist, and hips
- Dramatically expands clothing options
- Lifts and reshapes at the same time
Breast Reduction Techniques at YCL Plastic Surgery
- Vertical (lollipop) reduction
- Incisions around the areola and vertically to the breast fold. Preferred for small-to-moderate reductions. Less scarring than the anchor pattern and excellent long-term projection.
- Inverted-T (anchor) reduction
- Adds an incision along the breast fold. Used for larger reductions, offering the greatest control over shape and skin removal.
- Liposuction-assisted reduction
- For selected patients whose breasts are predominantly fatty rather than glandular, with good skin quality and acceptable nipple position. Minimal scarring, but limited lifting.
Dr. Low selects technique based on the volume to be removed, tissue composition, nipple position, and your priorities regarding scarring versus shape.
Who Is a Candidate for Breast Reduction?
You may be a good candidate if you:
- Experience neck, back, or shoulder pain attributable to breast weight
- Have persistent bra strap grooving or skin irritation beneath the breasts
- Find that breast size limits exercise or daily activity
- Feel your breasts are disproportionate to your frame
- Are at a stable weight and in good general health
- Have realistic expectations regarding scarring
Insurance note: breast reduction is frequently covered by health insurance where documented symptoms are present. Our office can help you understand the documentation your carrier requires.
Recovery & Expectations
Most patients are surprised by how much better they feel immediately — the weight relief is instant. Desk work generally resumes at 1–2 weeks, with strenuous activity and upper-body exercise at 4–6 weeks.
Swelling settles over the first two months; final shape continues to refine over six to twelve months. A supportive surgical bra is worn throughout early recovery.
Sensation changes are common early and improve for most patients over several months. Breastfeeding may be affected — worth discussing directly at consultation if future pregnancy is a consideration.
Scar Placement & Healing
Reduction scars follow the same pattern as a lift: around the areola, vertically to the fold, and — in anchor-pattern cases — along the inframammary fold itself. They are placed to sit beneath bras and swimwear.
Scars fade meaningfully over 12–18 months. In the overwhelming majority of reduction patients, the trade is one they would make again without hesitation.

Often considered alongside
Augmentation Mastopexy
Augmentation mastopexy combines a breast lift with implant placement — raising the breast into position while restoring the upper-pole fullness that a lift alone cannot provide.
ExploreBreast Asymmetry Correction
Almost every woman has some degree of breast asymmetry.
ExploreBreast Fat Grafting
Breast fat grafting transfers fat from one part of the body — most often the abdomen, flanks, or thighs — to the breast, adding subtle volume and softening contour without an implant.
